The industry is predicting no less than 76 new car launches for 2005. And we're not talking about facelifts and minor model variants, these are all-new cars. In fact, our diaries are already full to bursting for the first half of the year, so 4Car will be bringing you the latest from day one, starting with dep ed Farah's excellent preview of the year's first motorshows in Los Angeles and Detroit, which kick off later this week.

We just can't wait for the Range Rover Sport
Those two motorshows will give a major pointer to the most important new cars coming this year. For example, we may get a look at the 'baby Aston', a car that will take on Porsche's 911 in terms of size and price. I have to admit, this will be one of the cars of the year for me. I love 911s, but the idea of a car as gorgeous as a DB9 (I swear, there will never be a better looking GT) and as agile and good to drive as a Porsche is just so massively compelling. Equally, the idea of Land Rover launching a credible rival to BMW's X5 and Porsche's Cayenne is just mind-blowing stuff. That'll be the Range Rover Sport that, while not as adventurous as the original concept car, will take Land Rover into all new territory. Given how brilliant the new Discovery is, I'm willing to bet that the Range Rover Sport will be one of the year's sensations. And the overwhelming enthusiasm and pure car-guy energy that surrounds Land Rover's MD Matthew Taylor is so refreshing in an industry that has in the past been dominated by grey men in grey suits.
Other hyper exotic launches that will grace 4Car this year include a closer-to-production reveal of the Rolls Royce convertible hinted at by the 100EX cabriolet concept, and we'll also get a look at the next Jaguar XK8. So, readers, there will be plenty to keep your sweet tooth amused this year.

Can the 3-Series really be improved?
We will also see all-new launches of some mainstream models that us mere mortals are likely to end up owning, including BMW's 3-Series and Peugeot's 1007. The 3-Series seems just about un-improvable to us, so the driving of it will be one of the year's most anticipated events. Stay tuned.
The other thing that 4Car does better than anyone else is news. So we'll keep you abreast of everything that affects the motoring world, whether its environmental issues, the state of our roads or the price of the next 3-Series. And we'll keep tabs on some of the more dramatic events that are now unfolding - will MG Rover still be building cars at the end of the year, and how will ailing Jaguar fare with its impatient parent Ford demanding ever more efficiencies and savings?
All serious stuff, but we hope to entertain you this year, too. We'll be bringing you great drives and more features about buying and owning cars, as well as fun features such as the Ultimate Car Quiz. Anyway, there's loads to do and we better get on with it. Happy new year and all that...
