From the Australian press today (Clicky)

This is following an incident when a 5 year old child rode a quad-bike out of the family drive-way, struck a car and unfortunately died (despite wearing a possibly-improperly fastened helmet)....

QUOTE
Child safety organisation Kidsafe WA today said quad bikes, or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), were not safe for children despite being seen as recreational vehicles.

"It does seem as if there is this perception that this is a recreational activity therefore perhaps not that dangerous and something that the children can do," Kidsafe WA executive director Sue Wicks said.

"It is a piece of equipment. They might not have the same engine power as a racing car but they are fast and they're heavy."

Ms Wicks urged parents against allowing children to operate any kind of motorised vehicles.

"Young children don't have the experience and the skills to be able to properly control these motorised vehicles, and because they are motorised, when things go wrong, they go wrong very quickly," she said.

What age do all the F1 drivers start competing in motorised equipment?!!!! ranting2.gif

This is yet another "wrap them in cotton wool" directive by the sounds of things :pity:

Too damn fecking right!!! ranting2.gif ranting2.gif Sure, teach your kids safety and consider what they are capable of but a flat-out directive???!!!!!

This "advice" comes hot on the heels of government-sponsored advertising about how to feed your kids to stem the tide of childhood obesity in this country!!! FFS!!!!!

IMO a lot of things like this come down to the parents / guardians not being fully in control of their charges, a lot of parents / guardians these days just seem to want rid of their kids from under their feet and they don't care what the kids are up to.

Obesity is a massive problem in England also, and with parents / guardians who do not oversee their charges leisure time, for whatever reason, is it a surprise?

Instead of coming out with rules and regulations outlawing, or at least advising against, recreational activities there should be some rules and regulations concerning the amount of adults which must be present at any given activity.

I have some teacher friends, most of whom refuse to take parties out on school trips because of the fear of litigation should anything, god forbid, go wrong and one of their charges gets injured and yet parents / guardians when they are in charge of a child / children are virtually blameless by todays society rules :pity:

I have to agree BB... For whatever reason, the adults that "care" wrap their kids up in cotton wool and expect everyone else do the same....

And others neglect their kids. Kids need to be kids and explore the boundaries else how will they learn?!

Obviously each child is a case-by-case basis, but is there an age at which children can be put in charge of "motorised equipment" (in whatever saftey environment is appropirate)?

A quad bike is actually probably not the correct equipment for a 5 year old..... But I remember a completely kitted out "little tyke" in Leeds who used to ride a tiny motor bike around the park so well I'm sure he's headed for a career in MotoGP!

Where's our kart track employee?
Scream'n_Demon
What?
1) where were the parents and what were they thinking letting a child ride an ATV?
2) How is one ATV accident relivant to Karting? Karting is a sport, not a recreation, and therefore has controls and safety measures which, if adhered to, guarnatee safety.
3) In my (vast) experience with children and Go Karts (I work at an indoor kart track as a marshal) I have seen many, many children crash and hurt themselves. The reason for this is that they haven't learned to control the vehicle yet. Many parents bring their kids to the track to teach them how to control a vehicle properly. I'd say that if children aren't taught early on, then most will become bad drivers because their capacity for learning decreases as they get older.
Sure kids crash and hurt themselves, but they sure as hell won't be driving around with their foot jammed on the gas all the way around the track again will they? Its all part of the learning process in a controlled environment.
4) Racing Karts has led me to become a hugely better driver on the road in the ways of vision, awareness and control, and I believe that most kart racers can relate to this.

This is kind of crap is appalling.

By the way, I bet some of the kids at my Kart club would lap at 9-10 seconds a lap faster than Ms Wicks.
